Know Your (dead) CEO!

Jim Cantalupo

60 year old fast food CEO Jim Cantalupo, was at a McDonald's convention in Orlando, Florida when he had a heart attack and died in April. I don't often like to make fun of a tragedy, but maybe this was Cantalupo's just desserts for what he perpetuated as CEO of the golden arches.

CEO for just over a year, Cantalupo had been chosen to run the fast food giant following a trial where 2 obese teenagers sued, claiming that McDonalds made them fat. Cantalupo took the reins in calling the allegations ludicrous. But it looks like he didn't practice what he preached.

Here's what Cantalupo had to say about supersizing, obesity litigation, and healthy diets:

"Most of the people on the planet understand that it isn’t our problem that’s going to solve the societal issue of obesity. I think most people understand that. It’s not like tobacco. Tobacco, you never needed that to live. You need to eat food to live. And all our food is healthy, it’s not about healthy food versus non-healthy. It’s about balance, it’s about exercise. So deal with the real issue."

Read an interview Cantalupo gave to the Financial times in 2003, his thoughts on marketing to children, and Mickey D's fat rap.
